Wow, great questions - the first thing that popped into my head in terms of how it became so is the qualitative nature of emotional work, or any investment that doesn't result in a quantitative increase in productivity. I'm sure there are more reasons - I'm only scratching the surface.
The thing that rails me up is that all our technological advancement was supposed to make room for more than being productive.
At the same time, I'm optimistic that we're seeing a shift away from paid work as the means to all ends, e.g. men are spending more time caring for their children than ever before.
